Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves and masks have a shelf life just like milk and medications. So when the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences issued a call to support flood relief efforts in Louisiana, UTHealth donated stocks of soon-to-expire materials to assist with the state’s clean-up and recovery efforts. Heavy rainfall in August flooded much of Louisiana and damaged thousands of the state’s homes and businesses. UTHealth’s donation will assist labor professionals, homeowners, and volunteers with safely removing waterlogged materials from these devastated areas. “Safely removing debris from affected areas is a crucial but costly step in disaster recovery,” said Robert “Safety Bob” Emery, Dr.PH., vice president for Safety, Health, Environment & Risk Management. “We are very happy to assist with the relief efforts and to provide aid to those whose lives have been disrupted by the widespread flooding in Louisiana.” Supplies donated included coveralls, shoe covers, masks, bleach, and gloves. UTHealth has also been providing technical expertise on worker training and mold remediation.
